Cargo Surveys

Damage Investigations

Johnson Marine surveyors have experience with bulk and break bulk commodities including, but not limited to:

  • Grain

  • Fertilizer

  • Oil and Petrochemicals

  • Steel products

  • Machinery

We investigate cargo damage claims to determine the nature and extent of the damages along with the cause(s) of the damage. From there, we assist in taking the necessary steps to mitigate the loss caused by the damage. When requested we solicit bids, coordinate the recovery, calculate the loss, and document the final disposition of the damaged cargo.

Pre-Load and Post Load Inspections

Our Johnson Marine surveyors provide pre-load inspections to determine a vessel's suitability for its intended cargo. The findings of these inspections go towards coordinating barge cleanings and repair requirements with the cargo owner, shipper, and required contractors.

Our post-load surveys not only detail the condition of the cargo upon completion of loading, but also document any damages to the vessel's hull and apparatuses that may have occurred during the loading process.

Draft Surveys

We conduct Draft Surveys to provide clients with an estimated weight of the cargo aboard the vessel at the conclusion of loading. During our inspection, we ensure that the vessel was loaded in accordance to normal safety standards and ensure that the vessel’s load is laid evenly throughout the cargo compartment. At the conclusion of our inspection, we calculate our findings to give our clients an estimated weight of the cargo aboard the vessel. These inspections provide barge owners and cargo owners alike the assurance that their property is being transferred safely, while also providing an estimated weight to calculate cost and worth of cargo.
